What can you do for a migraine when you can’t be somewhere quiet?

I am staying in a hostel where it is insanely noisey, all the time it feels like. I’ve had terrible migraines the past 2 nights that won’t respond to anything. I’ve tried advil, tylenol, asprin, BC, prescription medications, using earplugs, turning out the lights, cool washclothes, everything. Does anyone have any suggestions I’m missing? The simpler the better since I don’t have much stuff out here and am not capable of driving to the store at the moment like this. But I welcome all ideas. Thanks so much.

Meditate. Breathe slowly, close your eyes. Detatch yourself as much as possible.
that can be hard if medications are not working, be sure to stay hydrated, sometimes a steamy shower helps, ice pack may help also – you may want to try freesh air so open the windows if possible – it could be a smell triggering the migraines – i wish you the best – migrains suck when nothing is helping – caffine is a big trigger too – so avoid caffine if you can!!
Try to get as much sleep as possible. I used to get terrible migraines, and I slept it off completely, while using Advil.
I found this great site [has helped me numerous times in the past,] that offers home remedies for almost everything.
Stop eating onions and massage
the back of your neck.
coffee… lots of coffee. Except at night of course.
Heat works for me better than the cold for some reason…Excedrin is the best for migraines that is otc….It has caffeine in it, that is what makes the difference. It doesn’t matter which Excedrin as long as you don’t get Excedrin Tension….All of the others are the same. Try to be still even though there is noise. I have the tv on low when I have mine…I then know that I am not dead, because I am certain at times that is the only way I would be rid of it…Good luck and rest well.
P.S. Caffeine is a trigger in some people, however it can help to alleviate the headache in most….
face cloth rinsed with COLD water and rung out..
put on forehead and back of neck.
also i find it helps when i put my arm over my eyes..
you said you tried that, but try putting it on the back of your neck..
also try laying with no pillow.. let your body lay flat so your blood flow is even..
i suffer from terrible migraines. and that is what i do..
you need to let your body relax so you can fall asleep.
if it helps to listen to soft music then do so.. it will drown out the noise
also if you can talk to the people around you and ask politely to be less noisy it will help..
(ps.. getting off the comp will help a lot!
hope you feel better.
i had the worst one last night .. i cried myself to sleep because it was actually making me throw up. and i got my period too.. so it didnt help!
Drink ice cold water. Get fresh air. Usually the cold water helps, stay hydrated and make sure you are getting all the nutrients you need. Do not think about the stress in your life. Only think of the happy things. Maybe the next best thing comming up in your life. But most of all stay healthy and you should’nt have the migranes.
I would have said dark room, soft earplugs and an ice pack on forehead/temples. But it sounds as though you have tried most of that. If prescription migraine meds have not worked for you, I would see a doctor SOON. Could be something more serious.
Of course, quiet is best but if you can’t do that:
Excedrin Migraine.
If you can’t get that, try a combination of other drugs you have in the house; two asprin plus two advil.
Drink plenty of water. Sometimes migraines are brought on by dehydration.
Rid your body of toxins; I know this sounds weird, but take a laxitive. My migraines sometimes come when I’m constipated.
In a dark room, do the following: Go to your bedroom, turn off all lights and close the drapes. Lie on your back, massage your scalp, forehead, cheeks. Now, with both hands, place your index and middle fingers above your nose and between your eyes, with quick lateral flicks, pull the fingers outward. (10 times) Now, do the same thing from the top bridge of your nose, flicking down and outward. Now firmly run your fingers across your face, starting at the inner cheek bones, pulling toward your ears and then down to your jaw. All this helps to drain the sinuses and also releave facial/muscular stress. Now place an ice pack over your eyes, forehead, cheek bones. AND place a very hot, wet towel over the back of your neck and sholders. Lie quietly and imagine the stress leaving your body from your scalp, then your face, your ears, your neck, your sholders, your chest, your back, your torso, your pelvis, your thighs, your knees, your calves, your ankles, your feet, your toes. Just imagine the stress LEAKING out of your body and being absorbed by your mattress. If you can sleep….do so.
I hope this works. It often works for me and I get extreme migraine headaches. I feel for you.
Try messaging the area between the thumb and index finger. use a firm circuler motion. but not to the point of pain. aternating between hands. almost to a meditating state.
The only thing that has ever consistently worked for me is laying down and slowing the heart rate. This for me would lessen the magnitude of the headache and give me something to focus on other than the pain.
For me I get about 1 or two migraines a year. Mine start with blind patches of vision. I have found the sooner I lay down when I see these signs, the less intense the headache.
Additionally, drinking fluids, mostly water if you can help it. Avoiding stimulants like caffeine and nicotine(if you smoke). And best bet is try and sleep it off, an herbal tea like camomile might help you get rested enough for sleep.
About the noise problem, that one will have to be handled probably by the person managing the hostel, I’m sure they have rules there about quiet hours. Also it would probably be best to have a person of authority tell others to be quiet as they are strangers and they may not be as sympathetic to your condition.
good luck
There’s a new development in migraine therapy:
We have treated 15 – 20 yrs cases.
There is no medicine for H/A OR MIGRAINE. Not only these but for almost all painful diseases. Hence they become chronic.
Acidity, excessive wind, cold , heat, sour food and sinusitis, constipation, intestinal inflammation;
Blockage in the flow of Vital Energy are their causes. None of them can be treated with medicine. Our 100% success in treating migraine &H/A confirms it.
Acupuncture is the best treatment. I can treat it with naturopathy and YOG, but how can you manage pl see.
Avoid late sleeping if possible;spicy, sour, stale bakery foods and alcohole.
Sweet foods, sweet fruits, milk, rice and good sleep will help you.
But you try one herbal remedy- two drops of drumstick leaves’ juice in opposite nostril if one side pains and both nostrils if full H/A will give you rescue. Betel leaf helps but it isvery strong.
If it is acute pl search a painful point 3-6 mm behind your thumb nail and press it, H/A will disappear within 30 seconds.
