What can I do to get rid of terrible headaches without always popping aspirin?

Try to stop your headaches before they start. If you only get them when studying… have you had your eyes checked??? You may need glasses. Also have good lighting, a comfy chair and use a desk. Try to minimise other distractions (tv, radio, etc).
Try to relax right before you study and yoga is great for after! My fiance gets extremely bad headaches and he had to go see a doctor. His eye prescription was wrong and he was stressed out. He got his eyes fixed and goes to the gym to relieve stress. find something that works for you. Having glasses may make it worse?
Hi Lula, first – of course – you need to see your doctor! Without some tests, etc. no one can know exactly what is going on. But there is a good chance you need to have your eyes checked and possibly glasses or, if you already wear them, a new prescription is in order. Sure, it could be something else, but since you get the bad headaches when you study, it sounds like they are being brought on by eye strain (or an extreme dislike of studying! *grin* – sorry I couldn”t resist!) Seriously though – do give your doctor a call right away. You really should not put it off. Let us know how you are doing!
You mentioned that your headaches seem to occur while studying. This could be as a result of improper eye wear, and I’d suggest that you go see your doctor. If he/she eliminates that possibility, then it could be something as simple as the type of chair do you sit in while studying, along with your posture.
Most headaches are due to strain on the muscles in the neck or head, or congestion of the blood vessels which supply them; the brain itself cannot feel pain because it contains no pain receptors. In the past what I’ve done to help alleviate them, or get rid of them is lay on my back with my knees bent and do pelvic tilts:
Many headaches that stem from the neck, can also be traced to the lower back, which is quite often the root of the problem.
The pelvic tilts really do work!
Some headaches are caused by dehydration. Drink plenty of water and see if that helps.
Other causes can be;
- lack of sleep, over-consumption of caffeine in tea or coffee or suddenly cutting down caffeine intake, food Allergy, Eyestrain, Fever, Hypoglycaemia (low blood sugar, especially if you have not eaten for some time).
- Cervical spondylosis (stiff neck, an ache which extends from spine to top of head, headache made worse by lifting, driving, or turning head slowly) and other spinal problems, Pre-menstrual tension (headache comes on before a period), and High blood pressure.
- A hangover headache is caused by dehydration (alcohol is a powerful diuretic).
I would seriously try those pelvic tilts. I’ve had friends that have had splitting headaches, then I tell about the pelvic tilt thing. Some laugh and respond with, “yeah sure, that wont work”. But after they do them for a few minutes, they are amazed at how their headache vanishes within a short time!
