According to the medical practitioners the neck tension headache is mainly caused by the constant tightening of the muscles that are involved. This kind of pain spreads gradually. As the headache starts spreading you can experience it along with the neck pain in the shoulder region.

You can feel the effected neck muscle turning sore when you touch it. The neck muscles feel tender and in one particular exact point the pain will be more distinct when pressure is applied on that part.

This particular point is referred to as the trigger point in medical terms. The trigger point is defined as a spot which when “activated” will tend to set off the neck tension headache.

According to the recent medical research and studies in this particular field, it is said that the neck tension headaches may be caused by the changes taking place in the trigger point. These changes lead in the production of fibrous materials that tend to take the place of muscle tissue instead.

It is also responsible for causing the pain experienced by the people suffering from it when they affect the nerves and capillaries in the pain area.

The most common symptoms experienced while suffering from neck tension headaches are the neck and shoulder pain along with acute pain at the trigger point and a repetitive aching soreness at the areas between the shoulder blades. Not only is that, as the pain becomes too severe it also leads to restricted movement of the neck.

Proper relaxing techniques and avoiding the stress-filled situations is the best way to prevent the developing of neck tension headaches. One should take regular breaks from work and do some stretching exercise to help loosen muscles in tension or by gently massaging the tensed muscles.

Other than the above, taking healthy food and maintaining healthy lifestyle is a must. Apart from medication acupuncture is considered to be one of the best options for an effective treatment of neck tension headaches.

By: Stewart Goh

About the Author:

Pain in the head is known as a headache. The scientific name for the condition is cephalalgia. Headaches are one of the most frequently reported conditions. In fact, it is estimated that everyone experiences mild to severe headache at some point in his or her life. Pain during a headache is experienced in one or more parts of the head as well as the back of the neck. The pain may be experienced in the nerves extending over the scalp and specific nerves located in the face, mouth and throat. Besides, the muscles of the head and the blood vessels located on the surface and base of the brain too may become painful.

Types of headache

The International Headache Society lists more than 150 types of headaches. The majority of the headaches can be classified as either primary (not caused by an underlying condition) or secondary (caused by other factors such as injury or infection). Tension headaches, migraines and cluster headaches are among the most common types of primary headaches. While being painful and annoying, the majority of headaches subsides on their own or may be relieved by over-the-counter painkiller medicines and/or changes in lifestyle.

Causes of headache

Researchers are still not clear about the causes of headaches; however, they have identified a number of causes as well as potential causes. Some of the most commonly reported causes of headaches include stress and fatigue, tension, migraine, musculo-skeletal conditions, hyper-mastication, eyestrain, dehydration, low blood sugar, migraine, viral infection and sinusitis. In rare cases, headaches may be caused due to life-threatening conditions such as brain tumours, meningitis, encephalitis, cerebral aneurysms and extremely high blood pressure. Headaches may also occur because of head injury. Women may experience headaches and even migraines due to fluctuating estrogens level during menstrual years.

Headache treatment

In most cases, headaches subside on their own without any treatment. However, to get an early relief you can take help of massage or herbal remedies. If this does not help, you can take help of non-prescription painkillers such as aspirin, ibuprofen, acetaminophen or naproxen. Sufferers of chronic headaches may need to consult a doctor for stronger prescription medicines to get relief from headache. Apart from giving you medications, your doctor may suggest you to keep a headache diary wherein you would be asked to make a note of when the pain started and how long it lasted. You will also be required to note down any additional factors such as what you ate, drank, weather conditions, sleeping patterns and details about your periods if you are a woman. The diary will help you to identify your headache triggers. You can learn to avoid these triggers and thereby reduce the frequency of your headaches.

Those who suffer from headaches frequently can also take the help of advanced drug-free headache therapies such as Cefaly electrotherapy device. Cefaly is a medically proven device that emits electronic impulses to your nerves that cause pain and provide you with drug-free relief from headaches. A regular use of Cefaly can also help to reduce the intensity and frequency of headaches.

In addition, you can take the help of a detox foot spa such as BioEnergiser Classic Detox Foot Spa and BioEnergiser Professional Detox Foot Spa. These home use detox foot spas relieve your body of toxins that may cause you headaches and migraines. With regular use of the detox foot spa, you’ll notice a considerable reduction in the intensity and frequency of your headaches

By: Jastin Bell

About the Author:

It is inevitable that we sometimes suffer from headaches due to stress, hormones and anxiety. But there is one type of headache that is rare and very painful. This type of headache is called cluster headache and it can start suddenly without any previous symptoms. The pain you will experience will usually start behind one eye but the whole side of your face will become red and swollen.

Cluster headaches are quite frightening to both the person who is suffering and his family because it can occur without even the slightest provocation. You should note though that a cluster headache generally lasts for a few minutes in most cases although some people may suffer from cluster headaches for several hours in severe cases. There is a pattern you should expect when you experience having cluster headaches because it usually occurs on the same time of the day for several weeks. Then the headaches can stop altogether but it can come back after several months.

Right now, there is no sufficient proof that cluster headaches are in any way associated with any other types of diseases. Many believe the cluster headaches are hereditary but poor lifestyle habits can also cause the cluster headaches in some cases. Likewise, it is also observed that heavy smoking, inconsistent sleeping pattern and strong medications can worsen the symptoms of cluster headaches.

It is sometimes difficult to distinguish cluster headaches from other types of headaches because many of the symptoms are similar. But giving an accurate description of the symptoms you are experiencing to your doctor can help him make the correct diagnosis. Recording the pattern of your headaches is very important because cluster headaches occur with a constant pattern everyday. Letting your family members and relatives have a talk with the doctor about your behavior when headaches occur is also essential to be able to distinguish the type of headache you are experiencing.

In addition, some people are embarrassed about some of the actions they do when cluster headaches occur because they sometimes hit their head against the wall or the furniture to relieve the pain. These actions are actually quite common to people who suffers from cluster headaches because the pain they feel is very acute and severe. You should not hide these facts from your doctor so that he will be able to give you the correct medication through judging the severity of your headaches.

If you are diagnosed with cluster headaches, you should expect to take two medicines. One medicine is to reduce the number of headaches you experience during the cluster period and the other medicine is used to relieve the symptoms of the cluster headache. You should note though that medications that are ingested usually take a long time to work. For this reason, your doctor will most likely prescribe a medicine that can be inhaled or injected into the body for the medications to work immediately. Cluster headaches are one of the most painful headaches you will ever experience but with the right treatment and the right attitude, cluster headaches can be prevented in the future.

By: Michael Russell

About the Author:
